An assassin is a murderer, usually a murderer who kills a prominent victim for political motives. The term is usually considered to be derived from the Arabic hashshashin, a member of an extreme Islamic sect active in northern Iran in the medieval period, although various other interpretations have derived the word from practices believed to have been performed by the sect, as well as being adapted from the name of the sect's founder.
