Bernoulli is the name of a family of eminent Swiss mathematicians of the 17th and 18th century. The family originated from Antwerp, but thrived in Basel. Their most important members were:

  • Jacques Bernoulli (1654 - 1705) - also known as Jacob or James is especially famous for his Ars Conjectandi, which was published posthumously in 1713. The Bernoulli experiment is named in his honor (as many other mathematical concepts).
  • Jean Bernoulli (1667 - 1748)
  • Daniel Bernoulli (1700 - 1782), son of Jean Bernoulli was physician, mathematician and physicist. He held professorships in St. Petersburg and Basel, laid the foundations of Fluid dynamics and was one of the first to approach a Kinetic theory of gases.
