Biblical literalism is a theological term, often attributed to the views of fundamentalists and religious fanatics, which means taking the Bible at face value, as a completely literal telling of events. Given the many self-contradictions and seemingly impossible events occurring throughout the Bible (ceasing the Earth's rotation, a tower reaching up to Heaven, a global flood, etc), it cannot be viewed as a scientifically defensible position.
