Bread

A staple food of many peoples, it is made from the ground grains of many cereals, often wheat, rye or barley.

It was originally unleavened until the Egyptians discovered the action of yeast, a by-product of beer production, although much unleavened bread is still produced.

Sliced bread was probably one of the first convenience foods.

Bread is simple to make. It merely needs flour and water plus leavening agent if required and a hot oven.

Toasted bread is part of the first meal of the day for millions of people, particularly with marmalade.
