It was founded in 1846 as the University at Lewisburg, and changed its name to Bucknell University in 1881, after benefactor William Bucknell, who helped save the university from financial ruin <ref>''History of Bucknell'' [http://www.bucknell.edu/x1180.xml]</ref>. The school colors are orange and blue and the mascot is Bucky the Bison.
