C.S.A.: The Confederate States of America is a 2004 American film written and directed by Kevin Willmott. The film takes place in an alternate universe in which the Confederate States of America won the American Civil War.

Plot

The film is presented as though it were a British documentary (actually titled C.S.A.: The Confederate States of America) being presented on a Confederate television network. The documentary is apparently controversial due to its disagreement with orthodox American views of American history, but is being shown in its entirety by popular demand. There are also short commercial breaks advertising racist products - some of which were real-life American products, including Darkie Toothpaste[1] and the Coon Chicken Inn restaurant chain.[2]

American Civil War

The documentary segments detail the history of America from the American Civil War to the present day. The chief turning-point, however, is the Battle of Gettysburg, which - thanks to the successful diplomacy of Judah P. Benjamin - includes British and French troops fighting with the Confederacy, thus turning the tide in favour of the South.

The Union forces later surrender to the Confederacy, and Abraham Lincoln is arrested after attempting to flee to Canada in blackface. After serving two years imprisonment, Lincoln is pardoned (in an effort to appease the conquered North) and is exiled to Canada, where he dies of old age.

Consolidation

Meanwhile, Jefferson Davis brings the North into the Confederate way of life by introducing a tax on Northerners that is alleviated by the purchase of slaves, and is supported by a series of novelists who romanticize the events of the Civil War, ignoring the true events and focusing on tragic love stories between Northerners and Southerners. At the same time, an attempt to separate the church from the state fails, and any non-Christian religions are outlawed in the CSA, although a small Jewish community is permitted to settle on Long Island.

American-Mexican War

By 1900, the CSA has adopted an imperialist agenda, hoping to compete with both the British Empire and the German Empire by invading Mexico. The conquest drags on longer than expected, thus preventing the CSA from entering the First World War, which still ends with German defeat despite a lack of American involvement. However, the conflict in Mexico ends in Confederate victory, and Mexican citizens are racially segregated from white Americans living in the country.

War with Japan

In 1929, the CSA retreats into isolationism following the Wall Street Crash, but is able to overturn the depression by revitalizing its slave trade. The CSA also begins friendly relations with Adolf Hitler in Germany, but disagrees with Hitler's Final Solution, thinking it to be a waste of potential slave-stock. Instead, the CSA launches an unprovoked attack on the Japan in 1941, claiming that Japanese power endangered the CSA's position in the Pacific Ocean. By "the grace of God" (the Atomic Bomb), the war is quickly brought to a close, with Germano-Japanese defeat (the same outcome as our Second World War).

Cold War

Afterwards, the CSA enters a Cold War with "Red Canada" following a rise in anti-Abolitionist sentiment in the Confederacy. A "Cotton Curtain" is erected along the Canadian-American border, and tensions continue into the 1990s, when the Cold War draws to a close.

Modern Day

The documentary ends in the modern day, with the CSA fighting in Iraq against the "Muslim Menace", and an upcoming election for the Presidency of the CSA that may or may not change the course of Confederate history once more.
