Censorship is the act of withholding information from a larger audience by a group of people or a single person who has the power to do so. Oftentimes it is done for the protection of the people, or to keep the group of people from knowing something bad about the empowered people.

Michelangelo was accused of obscenity when he finished The Last Judgment in 1541 because of his depictions of naked figures showing genitals. A censorhip campaign was mounted to remove the frescos, but the Pope resisted. When Michelangelo died a law was issued that genitals in works of art should be covered, and one of his apprentices painted over the parts in question. In 1993 the work was restored, but the work was left in its censored state. The "fig-leaf campaign" of the Counter-Reformation to cover all representations of human genitals in paintings and sculptures started with Michelangelo's works. One example is that the child Jesus in "Madonna of Bruges" remained covered for several decades. [1]

A similar campaign occurred in Victorian Britain.
