Claude Swanson

Claude A. Swanson (1862-1939) was an American political leader from Virginia. He was an active Democrat and as congressman (1892-1906), fought for rural free delivery mail routes. As governor of Virginia (1906-1910) he led the Progressive Movement in the state, and established the state board of health and the highway department. He served in the U.S. Senate (1910-1933). He supported Franklin D. Roosevelt for president in 1932 and was rewarded with an appointment as Secretary of the Navy (1933-1939).
