Clement Richard Attlee ( 1883-1967) was the United Kingdom’s prime minister from 1945-1951. He was the first member of the Labour party to serve a full term in Parliment as prime minister.

Atlee started the postwar consensus for a more comprehensive welfare state, government control of major industries and public utillies, and the creation of a National Health Service.

He oversaw the decolonization of Burma, Ceylon, India, and Pakistan.
