Anti-Christian?

No, the party that George Orwell was probably thinking of that was similar was the Humanist religion. This is yet another example of the propaganda technique of transfer. An effort to link Christianity with Orwellian groupthinkers. All too typical of the religious debate section.--Roopilots6 14:40, 12 October 2007 (EDT)

Yes

The enemy of Big Brother is Emmanuel Goldstein who is said to lead The Brotherhood that has been labeled as the enemy of the party. May not even exist for only the reason to give members of The Party someone to hate and fear. These may have been a tongue in cheek referral to Christianity and Judaism. The analogy is almost unmistakable to how Christians and religious Judasim is treated as the enemy in secular Humanist culture.--Roopilots6 17:26, 16 April 2007 (EDT)
Or any other rivalry between any other two world religions.
And since when do secular humanists see Chrisitians as an enemy?--Άθεος 21:30, 17 April 2007 (EDT)
Since they wrote it into their manifestos in 1933, 1973, etc... but I'm talking about the book 1984. You should read the Humanist Manifestos too. It's a very popular religion.--Roopilots6 10:37, 19 April 2007 (EDT)
In one section of the book, O'Brein says he believes the world is only a few thousand years old 'Because that is what the Party believes.' He dismisses dinosaur fossils as false, because 'The Party does not believe they exist.' Czolgolz 15:41, 19 April 2007 (EDT)
1984 was mostly a critique of Soviet Russia.Jaques 21:18, 19 April 2007 (EDT)
I thought George Orwell was giving a warning to all societies that lean towards the Big Brother state. Whether that be in Russia, the European Union, or the North American Union.--Roopilots6 21:00, 20 April 2007 (EDT)

No

Sorry, but this moot is retarded. Underscoreb 00:15, 12 November 2007 (EST)

On the contrary, Christians have an unquestioning faith only because of questioning originally. The Bible calls "noble" those who question what it says so long as they do so with an open mind and a desire to see "whether those things were so": "These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so." (Acts 17:11)

We are called to believe in God, but that does not mean without evidence. Otherwise, why would Jesus have showed His wounds to the disciples and called on them to "be not faithless, but believing"? (John 20:7) Why would Paul have debated with pagan philosophers, quoting their own poets, if reason was outlawed in Christianity? (Acts 17:28) The premise that Christians have an unquestioning faith itself seems based on a false premise. --Jzyehoshua 19:02, 20 July 2012 (EDT)

1984 on religion

The society in 1984 didn't have religion, not even the proles, as Winston notes:For that matter, even religious worship would have been permitted if the proles had shown any sign of needing or wanting it.

Emmanuel Goldstein writes:In philosophy, or religion, or ethics, or politics, two and two might make five, but when one was designing a gun or an aeroplane they had to make four.

Plus two other mentions in Part 3. For me, the scariest thing about Big Brother is controlling the past, "he who controls the past controls the future", I don't think any religion or group has ever been even remotely successful. Thank God.

Why conservative Christian? Can't you ask about any "fundamentalist" the same question? ד.לערנער 11:01, 18 March 2008 (EDT)

Political activists with an Islamic background have managed to "control the past" in several Middle Eastern countries. Ever hear of Holocaust denial? --Ed Poor Talk 11:04, 18 March 2008 (EDT)
