Democratic-Republican Party

The Democratic-Republican Party was one of the first two American political parties. Formed out of the remenants of the "Antifederalists" who opposed the United States Constitution but favored the Bill of Rights, they opposed strong central government. Notable Democratic-Republicans included Thomas Jefferson and James Monroe. They may also be referred to as Jeffersonian Democrats, Jeffersonian Republicans, or Jeffersonian Democratic-Republicans, as this distinguishes them from the modern Democratic Party and Republican Party. They are considered the forerunners to the modern Democratic party.
