The Dwarves of Tolkien's Middle-earth were slightly taller than Hobbits, but only came up the waist level of men. Dwarves—also known as the Khazâd in their native tongue, Hadhodrim in Sindarin, and Kasári in Quenya—are a race of mortals in the Lord of the Rings universe. Dwarves were created by Aulë the Vala. Dwarves are stout and tough because they were created when Morgoth still ruled the world outside of Aman. Dwarves are famous for their mining and blacksmithing skills, including building entire cities under mountains.

In The Hobbit they seemed funny, even childish. In The Lord of the Rings they were represented only by Gimli, who was always serious but never actually cheerless.

Dwarves have a great strength that is surprising for their small size.
