Ethelfleda (also Æthelflaed) (d. 918) “Lady of the Mercians”, was the daughter of Alfred the Great who became the last independent ruler of Mercia. She was married to Ethelred of Mercia in the late 880’s, and there is evidence that even before her husband’s death in 911, she had a degree of royal power.

She is known to have had built a series of fortified settlements (burghs) against the Welsh in the west and the Hiberno-Vikings and Danes in the north and east. She campaigned against the Danes with her brother, Edward the Elder She was succeeded by her daughter, Elfwynn, who was immediately deposed by Edward, Mercia becoming province of Wessex.
