Evil is defined as harmful, immoral, or extremely unpleasant. It is the opposite of goodness. What is considered evil varies among civilizations, but murder and rape are considered by most societies to be an example of evil.
According to Christian beliefs, evil entered the world when Adam and Eve ate the fruit from the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil[1]. This mirrors the ancient Greek story of Pandora.
A major problem for some religions is the Problem of Evil, trying to explain why a perfect God would make a world with evil in it. (The larger question, why a perfect God would create a world at all, is rarely addressed.)
