Frank D. Cheatham (born February 3, 1943) is a retired mathematics professor and former vice president for academic affairs at Campbellsville University (formerly Campbellsville College, located in Campbellsville in Taylor County in central Kentucky.
Cheatham was born into a farm family, one of nine children of Jeff Thomas Cheatham (1902-1991) and the former Gladys M. Wise (born 1925) of Merrimac in Taylor County.[1] He graduated in 1961 from Taylor County High School in Campbellsville. In 1965, he received his bachelor's degree from the then Campbellsville College, to which he commuted from the farm. He subsequently received two master's degrees, a master of science in 1968 from Tennessee Technological University in Cookeville, Tennessee, and a master's in 1984 in computer science education from the University of Evansville in Indiana. He earned his Ph.D. in mathematics between the two master's degrees from the University of Kentucky at Lexington in 1972. He held teaching assistantships at both Tennessee Tech and UK.[2] His retirement was effective at the close of the 2015 spring semester/[3]
Former CU president Michael V. Carter named Cheatham as vice president of academic affairs: He has worked at my side in this role as well as the role of trusted advisor on every major decision of my presidency. His love for Campbellsville University and Christian higher education has been and is evident."[2] In 1989, Cheatham received the first "Teaching Excellence and Campus Leadership Award” at CU, sponsored by the Sears-Roebuck Foundation. He received too the CU “Teaching Excellence and Campus Leadership Award” given by the university’s board of advisors. In 1992 and in 2000, he received the "Educator of the Year" award from the Campbellsville/Taylor County Chamber of Commerce. Cheatham served on the presidential search committee that selected Kenneth W. Winters as president in 1999 and Carter thereafter. In 1994, he was a leader in bringing the Internet to CU. He has also been faculty advisor for Sigma Zeta, the science and math honor society, and is a former national president of that organization.[2]
Cheatham has also been involved in the accrediting body, the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, and sat on the board of directors at the International Association of Baptist Colleges and Schools. He chaired the CU self-study.[2]
Cheatham's brother, Donald Ray Cheatham (born 1948), is a CU education and computer information systems instructor. Cheatham and his wife, the former Shirley Hardin (born 1944), have one daughter, Tammy (full name missing), and a grandson, Drew, a graduate of CU. He is affiliated with Campbellsville Baptist Church.[2]
