Hannah is the mother of the prophet Samuel.

In I Samuel 1 she is portrayed as one of two wives of a man named "Elkanah the son of Jeroham, the son of Elihu, the son of Tohu, the son of Zuph, an Ephraimite". Whereas his other wife (Penninah) had children, Hannah was barren. Though Elkanah loved Hannah (even providing her a double portion of the yearly offering), Penninah would regularly taunt Hannah for her infertility, leaving her depressed.

One day, her depression reaches the point where she cries out to the LORD, vowing that if He gives her a son, she will dedicate him to the LORD. The high priest, Eli, thinks she is intoxicated, but after hearing her prayer, blesses her. By the time of the next yearly offering, she gives birth to Samuel, but doesn't go up with the family as she is still weaning her son. When she finally does, she brings an offering and the child to Eli. She also brings Samuel a new robe each year at the yearly offering.

In Chapter 2 Hannah's Prayer is given to us. Later we learn that she would give birth to three more sons and two daughters.
