Purpose
Diacritical marks are used in many languages other than English to indicate variations in pronunciation. A good example of such marks are accent marks over vowels in French words, or umlauts in Germanic languages. Although they are not used in English, personal names and place names in particular may contain such marks and editors may wish to use them for the sake of accuracy.
Help
If an author wishes to use such marks but is unsure how to create them, the following procedure is suggested:
- Enclose the letter and desired diacritical mark, in that order, between a pair of exclamation marks, to indicate which letter and mark are supposed to be together
- Use the substitutions listed below to indicate which mark is required:
Diacritical Mark | Substituted Punctuation | Examples | ||||
Acute accent | ' | apostrophe | !E'! → É | !e'! → é | !I'! → Í | !u'! → ú |
Grave accent | ` | left apostrophe | !a`! → à | !e`! → è | !U`! → Ù | !o`! → ò |
Circumflex | ^ | circumflex (usually Shift-6) | !a^! → â | !A^! → Â | !i^! → î | !O^! → Ô |
Cedil | s | !cs! → ç | ||||
Umlaut | : | colon | !a:! → ä | !E:! → Ë | !I:! → Ï | !u:! → ü |
Tilde | ~ | tilde | !A~! → Ã | !a~! → ã | !o~! → õ | !N~! → Ñ |
Slash | / | forward slash | !O/! → Ø |
- Request help with converting the substitution into the proper mark by including the {{diacritical}} template at the top of the article. This will appear as follows:
The author requests help with diacritical marks. The author of this page does not know how to create characters with accents and other diacritical marks for use in proper names, and requests the assistance of Conservapedia in correcting this article. See Help:Diacritical marks for further information. |
This will also add the article to the category Editing help requested so that more experienced editors who wish to assist may readily find all articles requiring such assistance.
