"Hobbit" is a word invented by J.R.R. Tolkien for an imaginary half-height being, a scaled-down human in many ways, but with furry feet. The Hobbit was his first book featuring them, in particular Bilbo Baggins and his quest to the Lonely Mountain to help a company of Dwarves regain their treasure. His later masterpiece, The Lord of the Rings was an epic story about the adventures of four Hobbits, and Frodo Baggins in particular, as they left "The Shire" (land of the Hobbits) to help in the war against Sauron, the evil power attempting to overrun Middle Earth.
