Huntsville is a city in Texas.

It is best known worldwide as the home of Texas' execution chamber[1]; Texas is a strong proponent of capital punishment and regularly leads the nation in the number of executions per year.

The Texas Department of Criminal Justice, the state agency overseeing prisons (and death row) is co-headquartered in Huntsville. Sam Houston State University (named for the former governor, a large statue of whom is located near town) is also located in Huntsville; not surprisingly one of its top college programs is criminal justice.

Notes

  1. Death Row, however, is not located in Huntsville: the male death row is located west of Livingston, while the female death row is located near Gatesville.
