Perhaps it was Dr. King's most famous speech. He electrified the nation with his "dream deeply rooted in the American dream."

  • "I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: 'We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal.'"
  • "I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character."
  • "I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slave owners will be able to sit down together at a table of brotherhood."

The resounding poetry of his rhetoric soared over the crowd and into the hearts of young and old, using metaphors as varied as geology and banking and as mundane as the dinner table.

  • Let us not seek to satisfy our thirst for freedom by drinking from the cup of bitterness and hatred.

He quoted from the Bible:

  • ... until justice rolls down like waters and righteousness like a mighty stream. (Amos 5:24)
