John Claggett Danforth (born September 5, 1936) is an ordained Episcopal priest, lawyer and politician.
Danforth's grandfather and father were the chief executive officers of what was then the Purina pet food company. Danforth earned an undergraduate degree from Dartmouth College and law and divinity degrees from Yale University.
At the age of 32, Danforth was elected the Attorney General of Missouri in 1968. In 1976, Danforth was elected to the United States Senate and served there until he retired in 1995.
In 1999, United States Attorney General Janet Reno appointed Danforth to lead an investigation into the shootings at Waco, Texas.
In 2000, Danforth was one of the top candidates being considered by George W. Bush to be his Vice Presidential candidate.
In 2004, Danforth was appointed Ambassador to the United Nations.
Danforth is the author of the book Faith and Politics: How the "Moral Values" Debate Divides America and How to Move Forward Together.
In 2012, Danforth joined a group that purchased the St. Louis Blues in the National Hockey League.
Despite being a Republican, Danforth has shown himself to be moderate at times, showing liberal opinions on homosexual marriage,[1] immigration,[2] and the death penalty.[3] He participated in the bullying of Todd Akin as well[4] and opposes Donald Trump,[5] calling for him to concede to Joe Biden.[6]
