The Kawanishi H6K (Allied codename: “Mavis”) was a large flying boat flown by the Japanese Navy in World War II. It was usually used for long-range reconnaissance, but was sometimes sent on bombing missions. Certain models were designed as passenger transports. The Mavis was first delivered in early 1938, and served through most of the war. It was powered by four radial engines and had a crew of nine. Defensive armament consisted of three to five machine guns, and later models added a 20 mm cannon in the tail, but the plane was still easy prey for American fighters. It was replaced in front-line service by the Kawanishi H8K “Emily”.
