L. D. Kennedy (October 17, 1924 – January 27, 2022) was a Southern Baptist clergyman, educator, and author who from 1965 to 1987 was an associate professor and chairman of the Literature, Languages, and Library Science Department at Campbellsville University, then Campbellsville College, in Campbellsville in Taylor County, Kentucky.[1]

Background

The son of Marcus Dee and Lubie White Kennedy, he was born in Marston in New Madrid County in the Bootheel of southeastern Missouri, adjacent to the Mississippi River. He was converted to Jesus Christ as a young boy, and in 1946 was ordained to preach by the Poplar Springs Baptist Church in Milan in Gibson County in western Tennessee. He was the pastor of multiple churches in Tennessee, Kentucky, and Texas and directed mission work in such countries as Brazil, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.[1]

Education

In 1949, he received a Bachelor of Arts from Union University in Union, Tennessee, a Southern Baptist institution. He subsequently procured Bachelor and Master of Divinity degrees from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky. In 1965, he received a Master of Arts from Memphis University in Memphis, Tennessee. He later did additional graduate studies from the University of Kentucky at [Lexington, Kentucky|Lexington]] from 1967 to 1969 and Morehead State University in Morehead, Kentucky in 1969.He led 148 church revivals over the years. [1]

Publications

In 1968, he published his autobiographical book, Treasure in Earthen Vessels. He published nearly three hundred artiles, sermons, and poems in fifty-six periodicals, including Christianity Today, Southern Baptist Educator, and Mature Living,[1]

Family and death

Kennedy was married for sixty years to the late Louise Newman Kennedy (1923-2017), whom he credited for helping him to develop a successful ministry. In his later retirement years, Kennedy led Bible studies at the Sugar Creek Living Center in Brownsville, Tennessee, where he resided at the time of his death. The Kennedys had four children, Silvia Seares (husband Rick) of Prescott, Arizona, Mark Kennedy (wife Julie) of Summit, Mississippi, Karis Moore (husband Carl) of Overland Park, Kansas, and Joel Kennedy of Henderson, Kentucky. His funeral was held on January 30, 2022, at the Macedonia Baptist Church in Ripley in Lauderdale County in western Tennessee, with his nephew, the Reverend Roger Alford, officiating. He and Louise are interred at the Edith Cemetery in Ripley. [1]
