==Early life==
Martin was born at New Brunswick, New Jersey, in 1740. He received a classical education, graduating at Princeton College in 17601766, and helping to found the [[Cliosophic Society]]. <ref>[https://books.google.com/books?id=iYR9BgAAQBAJ&pg=PA69 A Princeton Companion]</ref> After, he taught school for several years at Queenstown, Maryland then studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1771.
