Maine, a traditional province in western France, was a medieval county lying between Normandy and Anjou. After a century of strife between the two, it was annexed by Anjou in 1126, and came into English hands with the accession of Henry of Anjou to the throne of England as Henry II in 1154.
It was one of the provinces lost to France by King John in 1204 – the fact formally recognised by Henry III in1259. It was retaken in by the English 1425 and held until 1448 when it was ceded to the French crown by Henry VI at the insistence of his French wife, Margaret of Anjou, an act that caused much resentment amongst the English nobility, becoming a contributing factor in the Wars of the Roses.
