Mesoamerica is the region of Mexico and Central America, which extends from the Tropic of Cancer to Costa Rica. The term Mesoamerica is only applied in a historical context, when referring to the precolumbian civilizations of the area. The word Mesoamerica was coined by the German anthropologist Paul Kirchhoff.
