Opeth is a Swedish progressive metal band, combining influences from 1980s and 1990s death metal with elements of 1960s and 1970s progressive rock. The band also exhibits elements of jazz, blues and European folk music. Frontman Mikael Akerfeldt, in particular, is known for being an avid collector of obscure 1970s vinyl, the styles of which have greatly influenced his own range of guitar, vocal and compositional styles. A number of Opeth albums have been produced by Steven Wilson, of popular progressive rock band Porcupine Tree. Akerfeldt is good friends with Mike Portnoy of Dream Theater. Their mutual admiration of each other's band led them to co-headline on the Progressive Nation Tour round the USA in 2008. Like Dream Theater, members of Opeth are known for their technical musical proficiency.
