Pete Stark is a liberal Democrat representative from California. He is also noted for being Congress' first admitted atheist. [1] He received a $1000 prize from the Secular Coalition for America for being the highest level admitted atheist currently holding elected public office in the United States. [2] He proclaims to be "a Unitarian who does not believe in a Supreme Being."
He has come under scrutiny recently for making a disparaging comment about President George W. Bush, saying that he was sending troops into Iraq to have their heads blown off for his amusement. Stark has since apologized for his comments.
Stark ran for re-election in 2012 but was defeated in the general election by fellow Democrat Eric Swalwell in California's newly created 15th district. The two Democrats faced off against each other in the general election as result of California's nonpartisan blanket primary.
ACORN
The House of Representatives voted overwhelmingly to defund ACORN, 345-75 on September 17, 2009. Seventy-five Democrats (Stark included) stood with ACORN and voted no, [3] despite nationwide attention related to voter fraud and recent revelation of ACORN's ties to prostitution including child trafficking and defrauding the IRS.
