A pony is a small horse defined as being 14.2 hh[1] (58 inches or 147 cm) or less at the withers (the highest point on an animal's back between the shoulder blades).

In the United States, ponies may be divided into the following sub-categories:

  • Small - Less than 12.2 hh
  • Medium - Taller than 12.2 hh up to 13.2 hh
  • Large - Taller than 13.2 hh up to 14.2 hh

The world's smallest horse is Thumbelina a genetic dwarf of a miniature horse[2] that is just 4.1 hh (17 inches).

Notes & References

  1. hh - hands high. A hand is 4 inches. The number after the period is not a decimal but refers to the number of inches.
  2. There are different definitions for miniature horse. Either less than 9.2 hh or less than 8.2 hh.
