The Russian Federation (Russian: Российская Федерация, Rossiyskaya Federatsiya), commonly referred to as "Russia", is the largest of the earth's countries and has the sixth largest population. It is known for its cold winters and harsh weather. Russia is a federation, consisting of a number of constituent entities. Nonetheless, the centralized government is relatively strong, led by President Vladimir Putin, who has nationalized the nation's energy companies and has been accused of bringing autocratic, anti-democratic tendencies to office. The capital of Russia is Moscow.

Russia has only been conquered once in the winter, by the famous Mongol Ghengis Khan. Hitler, Napoleon and many other famous military geniuses have tried to conquer it during the winter but all failed. This phenomenon is known as General Winter. Germany in World War I did declare peace with Russia in a treaty favorable to the Germans (often considered to be humiliating to Russia) at the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk, but did not actually conquer the country.
