South Vietnam was the colloquial name given to the Republic of Vietnam between its foundation in 1954 and its final collapse in 1975. At its foundation, the area controlled by the Republic of Vietnam lay to the south of the 17th parallel; that controlled by the Democratic Republic of Vietnam (North Vietnam) lay to the north of the parallel. South Vietnam was dissolved after Communist Viet Cong terrorists took power over the country.

Ngo Dinh Diem was the first president of South Vietnam. He was overthrown in 1963 and replaced by Duong Van Minh.
