State of Franklin

The State of Franklin was an unsuccessful effort beginning in late 1784 by settlers in the western part of then-North Carolina to organize as a separate State and be recognized as such by the United States.

North Carolina subsequently reasserted its jurisdiction by 1789, and then ceded the territory to the United States.

Today the territory is part of eastern Tennessee.

This part of history is virtually never included in American History textbooks, presumably because liberals dislike the independent local autonomy illustrated by this episode.
