Studio Ghibli is a Japanese animation studio founded in 1985 by Hayao Miyazaki, Toshio Suzuki, Isao Takahata, and Yasuyoshi Tokuma. Many of Ghibli’s films are very acclaimed by audiences and critics alike, and get a very big cast when dubbed into English. So far, six Ghibli films were nominated for Best Animated Feature at the Oscars, but only Spirited Away won the prize.^[1]

Popularity and success

At the Japanese Box Office, three Ghibli films are in the Top 10 highest grossing movies ever being Ponyo, Howl’s Moving Castle, and Spirited Away which are at number 8, 7, and 2 respectively. The Boy and the Heron and Princess Mononoke are at number 15 and 13 respectively as well.

Sales from merchandise are very high, and Tortoro from My Neighbor Tortoro grosses $1.4 billion in home merchandise such as homo video and plushies.^[2]
