- Good point. I suppose it could be the flippant way he treated Archer's death, but he did cast out Miss O'Shaughnessy (sp?) even though he admitted he may have loved her. While I wouldn't characterize him as "selfish" I would say he was driven and focused. Uncouth also seems strange, because Marlowe is very proper with Gutman and others when he needs to be, he's just unpredictable.
