The fact that homing occurs in every direction, not solely in to the north- or southpole doesn't mean it's done by god.
 
Evolution has caused birds being able to sense CHANGES in gravity or magnetism, not just find one direction.
 
It's also proven that birds use landmarks to find their route. Example: a pigeon following a highway going away from the direct route before turning at a certain point. This pigeon didn't follow the fastest route.
