In July of 2008, Stevens was indicted on charges of taking gifts from the oil servicing company VECO and its CEO Bill Allen who benefited from his legislation. On October 27th, 2008, Stevens was convicted on 7 counts of corruption, after a highly politicized trial meant to derail because of his stature as a Senator. While it was supposed that Stevens would lose handily in his re-election chances.Stevensattempt, howeverthe election remains a toss-up, vowed to continue his bid, and is in fact likely giving Stevens the chance to be re-the only convicted felon ever elected after all vote counting is doneto high office
