Tulip

A tulip is a flowering plant of the lily family. It grows from a bulb and produces flowers and leaves in the spring. It is a popular garden plant; the bulbs are planted in the autumn. Tulips were first cultivated in the area of the Ottoman empire (modern day Turkey). There they were considered an important symbol of virginal purity and given to new brides upon their betrothal. From there Tulips spread to Europe, were the incredible beauty with which God endowed them set off a speculative fury in Holland known as tulipomania.
