*Ravel, Daphnes N_JeEncce50Daphnes et Chloe, Wilhelm Furtwangler 1944 restored. Comment: Due to fascist totalitarian censorship during the Second World War, the German public had been shielded from news of the massive losses on the battlefield at the hands of the Russians and lulled into a dream like sleep by 24/7 broadcasts of music. This magnetic tape recording, first invented by the German firm of BASF to relieve the problem of German labor shortages at radio broadcasting facilities, was expropriated by the Red Army in 1945 and hidden in Kremlin Archives for the remaining Stalinist period and throughout the Khrushchev and Brezhnev eras. Leonid Brezhnev was known to have kept it for his own personal enjoyment. With the coming of Glasnost (openness) and Perestroika (restructuring) Soviet society became more open and democratic, the people were allowed to hear for themselves what Brezhnev had idled away so many hours listening to, and what the German people pondered as the Russian forces grounded up the fascist forces from the Western world in Ukraine and Belarus. It was returned to Germany in 1986 as a gesture of good faith shortly before the Fall of the Berlin Wall when it first became available to the public for commercial use, marking the end of the Cold War. It is one of the earliest orchestral magnetic tape recordings made. In later issues, Deutsche Gramaphone engineers have reduced some of the over modulation, however Furtwangler's unique interpretative qualities are ever present.
