Rachelle Ranae Shannon was born in 1956 and led a rather normal, average life until 1987, when she began involvement in the battle against abortion. The housewife and mother of two protested, marched, and blocked doors to abortion facilities, being arrested in California, Oregon, Washington, North Dakota, and Georgia for such charges as criminal trespass, unlawful assembly, failure to disperse, and violating court orders.
In May 1992, after her home state of Oregon passed a law increasing to five years the punishment for blocking access to abortion facilities, Shannon set fire to Willard Brown's abortion facility in Ashland, Oregon. Mr. Brown never reopened, and the abortion rate for Jackson and Josephine counties dropped drastically following the fire.
Shannon set fire to five other abortion facilities and attacked two more with butyric acid. Most of these reopened within a few days.
On August 18, 1993, Shannon used a .22 pistol to shoot George Tiller of Wichita, Kansas. Tiller is one of the few abortionists who terminate pregnancies throughout the entire nine-month gestation period. Though wounded in both arms, Mr. Tiller returned to work the next day to complete the late-term abortions he had started on the previous day.
Shannon served eight years on the ten year Kansas sentence, and remains in Federal prison with a projected release date of November 2018.
