The United States Capitol in Washington, D. C.
In the 2010 Midterm Elections, the nation will elect the 112th Congress, including all members of the House and one third of the Senate, together with a majority of governorships and many state and local offices.

After the Democratic Party successes in the 2006 off-year election (when they recaptured Congress), augmented by more gains in the Presidential Election of 2008, the question is whether the Democrats will hold their gains or slip back. Since the Democrats have an advantage of 257-178 in the House, the GOP must gain 40 seats to recapture control. Since the Democrats control the Senate 60-40 (counting the two independents), the GOP needs to gain 11 seats in the Senate to retake control; but even a one-seat gain would allow the GOP to filibuster obnoxious bills, for 60 votes are needed to break a filibuster.

Article of the Year: Evolution

darwin theory evolution

In 2006, the prestigious science journal Science reported concerning the United States: "The percentage of people in the country who accept the idea of evolution has declined from 45 in 1985 to 40 in 2005. Meanwhile the fraction of Americans unsure about evolution has soared from 7 per cent in 1985 to 21 per cent last year."[11]

Conservatism and Economics

Once again, conservatism triumphs over liberalism! The North Dakota Chamber of Commerce website states: "North Dakota boasts low unemployment and a fast growing economy. Last year, the state's economy grew at the fastest pace of any in the US and unemployment, at just 4.2 per cent, is the country's lowest. A fertile mix of natural resources, frugality and a plains-state work ethic have made North Dakota one of the most productive states in the US. "It's the nature of the North Dakota people," John Hoeven, the governor, said in an interview with the Financial Times. They're more conservative than the average American.'"[1] Well, well, well! They're more conservative than the average American! Imagine that! (The Flickr picture above was taken in Fargo, North Dakota. License: Attribution 2.0 Generic)

Intelligent design

Intelligent design theorists have provided abundant evidence that the core features of life consists of information processing systems that cannot be fully explained as being the result of unintelligent causes alone. Scientists who reject the intelligent design of the natural world do so on merely philosophical and illogical grounds and not due to the actual physical evidence.

Evolutionary Racism of Hitler and Darwin

Adolf Hitler's Mein Kampf was a work which contained evolutionary racism.[2] In his work Mein Kampf, Hitler wrote of "Monstrosities halfway between man and ape" and decried Christians going to "Central Africa" to set up "Negro missions," which Hitler stated resulted in the turning of "healthy . . . human beings into a rotten brood of bastards."[3] Adolf Hitler also wrote the following evolutionary racist statement in Mein Kampf: "The stronger must dominate and not blend with the weaker, thus sacrificing his own greatness. Only the born weakling can view this as cruel, but he, after all, is only a weak and limited man; for if this law did not prevail, any conceivable higher development (Hoherentwicklung) of organic living beings would be unthinkable."[4] Charles Darwin was also an evolutionary racist.[5][6] Prominent evolutionist Richard Dawkins stated: “What’s to prevent us from saying Hitler wasn’t right? I mean, that is a genuinely difficult question."[7]
