New York University, known colloquially as "NYU", is located in downtown Manhattan and is a politically very liberal.

New York University Law School is one of the few institutions to prohibits military recruiters, in protest that the United States' "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy is not sufficiently accommodating to homosexuals. After banning recruiters for 22 years, NYU Law School allowed a recruiter in 2000, who was greeted with boos and protests.[1]

NYU suffered a rash of six student suicides during the 2003-04 period. In fall 2004, another student from California committed suicide.[2]
