Abagtha (Sanskrit: bagadata "given by fortune") is the name of one of seven court officials serving the Persian king Ahasuerus at his Shushan palace. His title is sometimes translated as "chamberlain" (Esther 1:10) although occasionally it is written as "eunuch"; while the original Hebrew scripture uses סריס "sârîys" which is derived from the root "to castrate", it is more commonly used to describe any valet or similar court official, so it is probable that Abagtha was not in fact a physical eunuch.
