It is third in the list of most conservative American cities and the second most conservative among Texas' cities.[1] The conservatism is widespread in West Texas, and Abilene is the home of Dyess Air Force Base, one of two locations for the B-1 bomber.
Abilene was the home of two prominent Texas historians, Rupert Richardson and B W Aston, both affiliated with Hardin-Simmons University. Gary Perkins, disc jockey and musician, was born in Abilene but made his mark in El Paso, Texas, and San Diego, California.
