In Japan, abortion is de facto legal, with few limitations. Doctors can practice abortion on anyone who requests it. Abortion was not legal in Japan until 1948, and then it was only allowed under certain circumstances.
In Japan 79 percent of unmarried and 85 percent of married women approved of abortion in 1998. In 2001, 341,588 abortions were conducted, though this figure fell to 256,000 in 2007. The Maternal Health Protection Law revision of 2006 allowed a doctor to give any woman an abortion with her consent.
