Altitude is the measurement of the height of something relative to a given baseline, often the sea level and/or the seabed itself. It is vital to have an altitude measuring instrument in aircraft such as airplanes and helicopters, for the pilots to be sure they avoid coming dangerously close to the ground and/or other terrain. Properly operating altimeters are also important for maining separation from other aircraft.
