Homework Assignment 5

1. B. He welcomed immigrants into the United States

Correct.

2. Two positions of the Whig Party were anti slavery and they supported tariffs.

Good, but the Party itself was not clearly anti-slavery. Its members merely tended towards that position. There are better examples to use of key positions of the Party. (Minus 1).

3. President Polk told Congress that the Mexican’s fired on American’s on American soil. This started the Mexican War. The war ended with the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo.

Good, but mention how Polk wanted to start the war to get more land.

4. The most important person in the period 1840-1860 was probably Abraham Lincoln. He was the guy who kept the confederation together.

Lincoln did not have that effect during that period. In fact, Lincoln didn't keep the country together all that well afterward either! (Minus 2).

5. Bleeding Kansas occurred because the people living in the states were given the choice on whether to make it a free state or a slave state. Kansas got its title “Bleeding Kansas” because people were killing each other. Slave owners would kill abolitionists and visa versa.

6. Steven Douglas is being punished for supporting the Nebraska Bill. After he supported that bill, his fame started to drop.

He was still famous afterward, and the cartoon is not about "fame". But otherwise your answer is good. (Minus 1).

7. There was way too much animosity among the American’s to have avoided the Civil War. The tension was continually growing between each side. It was going to explode at some time.

Good. Note that American's in your answer should not have an apostrophe.

8. H2 The Compromise of 1850 was the greatest piece of legislation in the 19th century. It admitted California as a state, and made it legal for the South to bring slaves into the United State’s Southwest Territories. The slave trade was also abolished in D.C. Texas then received $10 million to pay off its dept.

Excellent. Note: United States', not United State's.

9. H4 John Brown did not help the cause. He only added violence to more violence. He increased the tension between both sides.

Excellent.

10. The Freeport Doctrine cost Douglas his support in the presidential election of 1860 because he supported the idea that if the majority in a stated voted to ban slavery, then slavery should be banned in that state.

Superb.
Good work. Score: 96/100.--Aschlafly 13:52, 18 October 2008 (EDT)
