1.How could you have prepared better for the midterm exam, and which part of American history do you think you could improve most for next time? I think I should have concentrated more in class because Mr. Schlafly will be talking about the most important events in American History. I memorized things better when someone lectures them to me because they seem more interesting to me rather than me reading them in a monotonous tone. I should have looked more on the internet for some more illustrations or cartoons that describe a time in history because it is easier for me to study terms that you can visually see because then you have a picture you can refer to in your head. Before the next exam I would like to improve my knowledge of the dates of the inaugurations of our former presidents and for what they are best known.

Good analysis. Many of the questions did come from statements in class.

2.Which is your favorite question on the midterm exam that you missed, and what do you like about the question or subject matter? My favorite question on the midterm exam was “He who has gold makes and accomplishes whatever he wishes in the world and finally uses it to send souls to paradise” because you had to use logic to answer it. Christopher Columbus did not have money to try to sail to the Indies a different way so he had to ask the King and Queen of Spain for money and ships. He knew people who have money have power to do what they want and they can chose what to do with it, which is either a gift to other people or a curse.

Excellent, will use as a model!

3. Comment on any aspect of the Scopes Trial or the issues leading up to it, and/or can you compare it to any other influential trial in American history? The trial between Roe v. Wade is very similar to the Scopes Trial because they both argue about the development of a human. In the Scopes Trial, a disagreement whether man had evolved from an ape, was attacking the Christian beliefs as does the Roe v. Wade trial. In both trials they are saying that each being was soulless before they were considered a human. Apes are animals and do not have souls which make them lower than humans. They follow their species’ instinct rather than deciding what they will do by themselves - free will. Many people today believe that when a woman conceives that being inside of her only a fetus and is worth nothing and is at the mercy of its mother’s decision. They think that this living creature only becomes a baby when it appears and acts like one and that it is not immoral to kill it before its looks like a human. In both trails they do not respect human life and the gift that we were made in God’s image and likeness.

Terrific analysis. One of the very best in the class.

4. Do you think the United States should have entered World War I, and why? I think the United States should have entered World War I because the Germans were sinking ships with Americans on board. USA had to show the world that foreign countries should not mess with them and that they were not afraid to use their well-equipped army to defend their citizens.

Good.

5. Your view of Teddy Roosevelt, please. Teddy Roosevelt must have been a very courageous man to have been so young when being president. Under his tough and brave character he was very merciful to the weak and young. For example, during a bear hunt in Mississippi, Theodore commanded the mercy killing of a wounded young bear so that he may not have to suffer. This incident resulted in a child’s most beloved toy, the teddy bear. Roosevelt tried to be fair to everyone, which he called a “square deal” and he also increased the power of the executive branch. Roosevelt was a wonderful president because he sought world wide peace demonstrated when he contributed to the end of the Russo-Japanese War. Theodore must be commemorated for trying to please everyone.

Fantastic answer again.

6. Pick one of the Constitutional Amendments 16 through 19, and express your understanding and view of it. The 19th Amendment, which was ratified in 1920, gave women the right to vote. I am glad this Amendment was made constitutional because women are American citizens too and they are just as worthy as men to vote. At that time women were thought to be servants to their husbands and they could not own land. Women were treated with less respect at that period of time and were not given as many privileges as men. Women were just as capable at working as shown in World War II when the women had to do men’s work because the men were needed in battle. Men should respect women because without them there would be no human life.

Right, and so true about the need for women for human life!

7. Explain the cartoon. This political cartoon published in 1905 depicts President Theodore Roosevelt pulling the ears of both Russia and Japan. Teddy Roosevelt was awarded the Nobel Prize for bringing an end to the Russo-Japanese War. Both sides were getting tired of the war and wanted peace. Russia had an extreme amount of causalities and also had to deal with a revolution starting at home. Japan became close to bankruptcy and wanted to end the fighting. President Roosevelt had acted at the right time, when both countries were tired of waiting for the other to surrender, to negotiate an end to the war. In the cartoon Roosevelt is the angel of peace.

Superb.
One of the best homework papers in the class! Absolutely terrific. Score: 70/70. Congratulations!
