Amish and electricity: Amish have independence from government-controlled suppliers of energy.

Amish use electricity, but not from the power grid. They are entirely "off-the-grid," and rely instead on other forms of electricity, such as battery power.[1]

The reason for being off-the-grid is the same as that cited by conservatives and others today: to avoid dependence on government-controlled power, which is increasingly unreliable and subject to political manipulation.

Diesel generators

Some Amish use a diesel generator to charge a set of 12-volt batteries, which can then converted into 110-volt alternating current on which most appliances can run.[2]

Refrigeration

Many Amish use propane tanks to provide refrigeration.
