Anastasio Somoza García (February 1, 1896 - September 29, 1956) was the president of Nicaragua from January 1, 1937 to May 1, 1947 and again from 1950 to 1956.
Somoza had good relationssips to the U.S. government. During the Presidency of U.S. President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Nicaragua became a signatory of the Pan American Union and later joined the Allied Powers during World War II. At the end of the War, Somoza led Nicaragua into the United Nations.
On September 21, 1956 Somoza was murdered by Rigoberto López Pérez, an Nicaraguan poet and music composer. After Somoza's death his son Luis Somoza Debayle took power.
