Anniston, Missouri

Anniston is a town in central Mississippi County, Missouri. It had a population of 232 at the 2010 census.

History

The community of Anniston first developed around 1890-91 and was initially labeled "Hainley's Switch" in honor of Jacob Hainley, who owned a sawmill near the Cotton Belt Railroad. For unknown reasons, in 1895 the name of the settlement was changed to Anniston after the city of Anniston, Alabama.

Geography

Anniston is located on Missouri State Highway 75 in central Mississippi County, about eight miles south of Charleston and four miles northeast of East Prairie. Its exact coordinates are 36°49’28”N, 89°19’35”W.

The town lies on the flat bottomland of the Mississippi Alluvial Plain. It has a total land area of 0.39 square miles, and an average elevation of 312 feet.

Demographics

At the 2010 census, Anniston had a total of 232 inhabitants, grouped into 94 households, with a population density of 594.9 people per square mile. This figure represented a significant decrease from the 2000 census, when Anniston had a population of 285. 97.41% of the inhabitants were White, 2.16% were African-American, and 0.43% were from two or more races.

The median age in Anniston was 43.4 years, with 22.4% of inhabitants under the age of 18, 6.0% between 18 and 24 years old, 23.7% between 25 and 44, 25.0% between 45 and 64, and 22.8% 65 years old or older. The sex ratio was 49.1% male, 50.9% female.

According to the 2010 American Community Survey, the median household income in Anniston was $38,500, and the median family income was $42,768. The unemployment rate was 12.4%. The per capita income was $16,211. About 16.9% of the population lived below the poverty line, including 10.9% of people under the age of 18 and 29.7% of people 65 years old or older.

Education

Anniston is served by the Charleston R-I School District, into which its own school was incorporated in 1963.
